Valentine’s Day brings a wave of beautiful blooms—roses in passionate red, romantic lilies, vibrant tulips, and more. At Flower Synergy, we pour love into every arrangement we create, and nothing makes us happier than seeing those flowers brighten your home (or someone special’s) for as long as possible.
With the right care, your Valentine’s bouquet can easily last 7–14 days or more, depending on the varieties. Here are our top florist-approved tips to maximize their vase life and keep the romance blooming!
1. Start Fresh: Prep Your Bouquet Right Away
When your flowers arrive (or when you pick them up from us!), unwrap them immediately. Remove any plastic sleeves, rubber bands, or ties.
- Fill a clean vase with room-temperature or slightly warm water (around 100–110°F/38–43°C)—flowers drink warm water more efficiently.
- Add the packet of flower food we included (or grab extra from us next time!). It provides nutrients, balances pH, and fights bacteria.
- Remove any foliage that will sit below the waterline—leaves in water decay quickly and cloud the vase.
2. Give Stems a Fresh Cut
This is the #1 most important step!
- Using sharp scissors or a knife, trim 1–2 inches off each stem at a 45-degree angle. Cutting underwater (submerge the stems in a bowl or sink) prevents air bubbles from blocking water uptake.
- Re-trim every 2–3 days when you change the water—stems can seal over, so a fresh cut keeps them drinking happily.
3. Change the Water Regularly
Fresh water is non-negotiable! Bacteria build-up is the fastest way to shorten vase life.
- Swap out the water every 1–2 days (or whenever it looks cloudy).
- Rinse the vase thoroughly each time.
- Re-add flower food according to the packet directions.
- No flower food? A DIY version works in a pinch: add a tiny drop of bleach (to kill bacteria) + a teaspoon of sugar (for food) per quart of water.
4. Choose the Perfect Spot
Location matters more than you think:
- Keep flowers in a cool spot (65–72°F/18–22°C).
- Avoid direct sunlight, heating vents, radiators, ceiling fans, or appliances that give off heat.
- Keep them away from fruit bowls—apples, bananas, and pears release ethylene gas that speeds up wilting.
5. Daily TLC and Troubleshooting
- Top off the water daily so stems never dry out.
- Remove any wilted petals or leaves promptly—they can contaminate the water.
- If a flower starts to droop early, recut its stem and place it in fresh warm water separately for a revival chance.
Bonus: Make It Last Even Longer
Roses, carnations, and lilies are naturally longer-lasting Valentine’s choices. If you want maximum longevity next year, ask us for hardy varieties or preserved options!
